noun - Manhattan Island Swimming Association (MISA) was a governing body established in 1982 by Drury Gallagher with the assistance of Tom Hetzel. It was organized by Julie Ridge between 1982 and 1991 to conduct the annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York City.
Mission[edit]
The MISA organized and certified open water swims around Manhattan Island in New York, U.S.A. It relinquished its rights and obligations to the Manhattan Island Foundation (MIF) in 1992 under the leadership of Morty Berger. The MIF held its first open water swim in 1993. At the current time, open water swims around Manhattan Island are organized by NYC Swim and New York Open Water.
