1st FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships[edit]
The first FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships was held 16-19 August 2012 in the Welland International Flatwater Centre, located in the heart of the Niagara Region. It is part of the Niagara Open Water Festival in Welland, Canada. The meet manager was Nicole Normandin with Pierre Lafontaine as the CEO of the host organisation Swimming Canada. The organising committee includes Lisa Matheson, President Social Synergetics, Stephen Fischer, Executive Director Welland Recreational Canal Corporation, Bram Cotton, Executive Director Niagara Sports Commission, Frank Coy, Partner Water Communications Inc., Erin Terreberry, Program & Event Manager WRCC | WIFC, Nate McLellan, Event Co-ordinator WRCC | WIFC, Mary Melymuka, Quality Systems Specialist ArcerlorMittal Dofasco, and Janice Makepeace, Volunteer Co-ordinator WRCC | WIFC.
2nd FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships[edit]
The second FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships were cancelled and were to be held on Eilat's North Beach in Israel between 28-30 August in 2014. The 2014 FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships were then shifted to Balatonfured and Lake Balaton in Hungary between 5-7 September 2014.
3rd FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships[edit]
The third FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships was held in Hoorn, Netherlands in 2016 after being moved from Mexico. Races included 5 km, 7.5 km and 10 km distances.
4th FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships[edit]
The fourth FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships was held in Eilat, Israel in 2018. Races included 5 km, 7.5 km and 10 km distances.
5th FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships[edit]
The fifth FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships will be held in Beau Vallon, Seychelles, France in the south Pacific between 1-4 September 2022. Races included 5 km, 7.5 km and 10 km distances.
Age Groups[edit]
The age groups are determined by the age of the athlete as of 31 December 2012 and include a Youth Division (14-16 years for boys and girls) and a Junior Division (17-18 years for boys and girls).
Events[edit]
In the Youth Division, the boys and girls compete over a 5 km course (2 loops). In the Junior Division, the boys and girls compete over a 7.5 km course (3 loops).
The mixed-gender Team Event is a 3 km open water swimming relay comprising of 3 swimmers, either 2 boys and 1 girl or 2 girls and 1 boy. There are two age categories for the 3 km Team Event: 14-16 years in the Youth Division and 17-18 years in the Junior Division.
For the Team Event, swimmers can "swim up"; that is, a maximum of 2 swimmers from the 14-16 age category can swim in the 17-18 age group category with 1 team per Federation.
Total Entries[edit]
A maximum of two athletes per Federation are allowed per event in the individual events and a maximum of 1 team per Federation is allowed per age group in the Team Event.
