Continuous stage swim
noun - A continuous stage swim or a non-contiguous stage swim is a type of solo swim, relay or race conducted over two or more consecutive days where the distance of the individual stages can vary on each day. The start of the subsequent day's swim is not necessary near the previous day's swim finish, primarily due to tides, currents or distance covered during the rest time.
In a traditional stage swim or standard stage swim, the start point of each stage is at or near the same point as the finish of the previous day's swim. The overall final time is the culmination of the swimming times of the individual stages. The overall final distance is the straight-line tangent distance is measured from the starting point to the finish point in statute miles, nautical miles or kilometers. The cumulative swim time (i.e., total time spent in the water) is different from the cumulative time (time from the start to the finish inclusive of rest time between stages). The finish on the final day can be at the same location or at a different location than the start on the first day.

Types of Stage Swims
Standard Stage Swim
In a standard stage swim or a traditional stage swim, the swimmer begins the swim on each day at the exact point where the swim on the previous day was finished.
Continuous Stage Swim
In a continuous stage swim or non-contiguous stage swim - that is different from a traditional stage swim or a standard stage swim - the swimmer begins the swim on each day at the exact point where the swim on the previous day was finished. In a continuous stage swim or non-contiguous stage swim, the swimmer is allowed to float with the currents and tides during the non-swimming time and begins the swim on each day at whatever point the swimmer wishes.
Assisted Stage Swim
The stage swim can be assisted or unassisted. If assisted, the swimmer can wear or benefit from a wetsuit, protective swimwear (e.g., stinger suit, technical swimsuit, fins, paddles, shark cage or protective jellyfish cage.
Unassisted Stage Swim
If unassisted, the swimmer wears only traditional swimwear (as defined by the English Channel or Marathon Swimming Federation community), goggles, ear plugs and one swim cap. In either assisted or unassisted swims, the stage swimmer can swim together with a pace swimmer.
Tandem Stage Swim
In a tandem stage swim, there can be two or more swimmers swimming simultaneously or side-by-side or in a group at one time.
