Alton Motobu

Alton Motobu (born in 1950 in Chicago, Illinois) is a 68-year-old American ocean swimmer from Aiea, Hawaii.

Education & Occupation

He graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa (BA). The US Army veteran is employed as an Information Technology Analyst at the State of Hawaii Department of Accounting and General Services

• He was inducted in the Hawai'i Swimming Hall of Fame, Class of 2018 in the contributor category.
• He is the president of the Hawai'i Swimming Hall of Fame.
• He is a member of Waikiki Swim Club where he has served as Vice President for Race Operations, as Race Director, and since 2002 has been Finish Area Facility Coordinator for Waikiki Swim Club-sponsored ocean races (11 per year).
• He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hawaii Swimming Legacy Project where he serves as a member and as Chairman of the Ocean and Channel Swimming Advisory Board; and as Legacy Project Secretary to the present.
• He is a Water Safety Instructor for the Hawaii Red Cross.
• He was a member of the Aloha Council of the Boy Scouts of America and a Scoutmaster, where he taught swimming, lifeguarding, and personal fitness.
• He has won the WSC Spirit of the Humu award (for volunteerism) twice and the Humu Cup (most points scored in WSC races) four times.
• He has completed 6 Hawaii channel crossings (including 1st crossing of Alalakeiki Channel)
• He has swum the Waikiki Roughwater Swim 35 times.
• He has swum in the Double Roughwater 26 times.
• He completed a number of channel swims and has finished the second most number of Waikiki Roughwater Swims in history, currently at 35.
• He is on the advisory board for channel swimming at the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame.
• He completed the first 12.1 km crossing of the Alalakeiki Channel in 1992 from Kahoolawe to Maui.
• He completed a 14.2 km crossing of the Maui Channel in 1995 from Lanai to Maui.
• He completed a 15 km crossing of the Kalohi Channel in 1995 from Lanai and Molokai.
• He completed a 13.7 km crossing of the Palilolo Channel in 1998 from Maui to Molokai.
• He completed a 14.2 crossing of the Maui Channel in 2003 from Lanai to Maui.
• He completed a 12.1 km crossing of the Alalakeiki Channel, the first official crossing in 2006 from Kahoolawe to Maui.
• He finished 29th in the 7 km Possibly Annual Hawaii Christmas Looong Distance Invitation Rough-H2O Swim on 28 October 2017 from San Souci Beach to Ala Wai Channel to San Souci Beach on Oahu.
• He was inducted in the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame, Class of 2018 on 8 September 2018.
