Waikiki Swim Club

The Waikiki Swim Club or WSC has been devoted to ocean swimming since 1971. It is Hawaii's oldest organized club devoted to promoting safe and fun ocean swimming.

The club sponsors several ocean swims and biathlons, including the North Shore Swim Series, the Christmas Biathlon, and the Valentine's Day Biathlon.

Members and friends also meet regularly for casual ocean swims. With over 160 members, including swimmers spanning a wide range of age and ability, the club offers an abundance of knowledge, aloha and camaraderie for those interested in ocean swimming in Hawaii.

History of the Club

Once apon a time there was a small band of Hawaiian swimmers who frolicked in the warm waters off Waikiki and elsewhere on the island of Oahu. Now, being that many in this group were spawned from age group and college swimming programs it occured to them that although they may be getting a little mushy around the gills there was no good reason that mature adults couldn't keep competing. Hence sprang forth the Waikiki Roughwater Swim and a most audacious challenge to the mighty Californian swimmers in the form of the Maui Channel Swim. In 1971, after the 2nd Waikiki Roughwater Swim, this group became constitutionally founded as the Waikiki Swim Club (WSC). See the original members list. Based on the principle of lifetime vigorous swimming for fun, sport and health the Club grew in membership and in the promotion of adult swimming in Hawaii.

Ironman History

During an awards banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, John Collins, a Naval Officer stationed in Hawai'i, and his wife Judy Collins, began playing with the idea of combining the three toughest endurance races on Oahu into one race. They decided to issue a challenge to see who the toughest athletes were: swimmers, bikers, or runners. On 18 February 1978, 15 competitors, including Collins, came to the shores of Waikiki to take on the first-ever Ironman challenge.
