2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim gold medalist Ferry Weertman and FINA 5 km world champion Ashley Twichell won the 2018 RCP Tiburon Mile in San Francisco Bay, California
San Francisco Bay is a shallow estuary in the U.S. state of California. It is surrounded by a contiguous region known as the San Francisco Bay Area, dominated by the large cities San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose.
Open Water Swimming
- Open water swimming continues year-round in San Francisco Bay, centered around Aquatic Park with the Dolphin Club and South End Rowing Club.
- Other events include the RCP Tiburon Mile and solo swim across the Golden Gate Bridge and over 130 years of open water swimming history at the Olympic Club.
- The longest solo marathon swim in the San Francisco Bay was the Five Bridges Swim by Ken Mignosa on 26-27 May 2019. His attempt of the 52 km course started at the Dumbarton Rail Bridge, then proceeded to the Dumbarton Bridge, the San Mateo Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and finally to the Golden Gate Bridge, but ended short after over 21 hours. The swim is recognized by the Marathon Swimmers Federation as the 47.8 km Dumbarton Rail Bridge to Anita Rock course.
