Turks & Caicos
Turks & Caicos is an island nation with UK Overseas Territory status composed of 40 islands and smaller "cays" located in 550 miles southeast of Miami in the North Atlantic / Caribbean region. Only 8 of the 40 islands and cays are inhabited. Providenciales (or "Provo") is the most populous island with 25,000 people and served by a major jet airport with multiple daily flights from the US and Canada.
These mostly arid tropical islands and cays are known for breathtaking clear turquoise water, endless stretches of perfect white sand beaches, and low key atmosphere.
Open Water Swimming[edit]
Grace Bay on Provo, where most of the hotels are located, is protected by the third largest barrier reef in the world and serves as an ideal location for open water swim training and competition. Every year in July, Grace Bay, Provo hosts the Turks & Caicos "Race for the Conch" Eco-SeaSwim, back-to-back 1 mile and 2.4 mile events that draw competitive open water swimmers from the US, Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe.
