Tamara Bruce (born 17th March 1977) is an Australian open water swimmer, swimming coach, and manager who was inducted as an Honor Swimmer in the Class of 2017 in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Family

Her father, Roger Bruce, is an Olympic pool swimming coach who also coaches open water swimmers. Her 8-year-old son Bay is also an open water swimmer who competed in his first ocean swim in Rottnest.

Honors

Bruce was selected as an Honor Swimmer in the Class of 2017 in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Open Water Swimming Career

  • Bruce was the overall winner at the 1992 Rottnest Channel Swim at the age of 14 when she established a new record.
  • Bruce established the female record in the Rottnest Channel Swim, a 19.7 km race in Western Australia in 4 hours 10 minutes 3 seconds in 1993 to the natural jetty, a record that still stands today.
  • Bruce completed one duo crossing and two team crossings at the Rottnest Channel Swim.
  • Bruce completed in the 40 km Sydney Harbour International Invitational Marathon in 1991 as her first marathon swimming experience, finishing 5th in the female division and 12th overall with a time of 8 hours 14 minutes.
  • Bruce crossed the English Channel on 2 September 1994 as a 17-year-old in a time of 7 hours 53 minutes, ranking her 14th overall in English Channel history and fastest time for an Australian woman.
