Steven Hurwitz

Steven Hurwitz is an American open water swimmer from the San Francisco Bay area. Hurwitz is President of Bay Area Herbs & Specialties, the nation’s premier supplier of fresh culinary herbs and specialty produce. He is husband and father of two teenage children and a member of the South End Rowing Club who has completed over 1,100 Alcatraz Island swims over the course of his career.
Open Water Swimming Career[edit]
- at the age of 52, Hurwitz completed his 1,000th crossing between Alcatraz Island and the San Francisco mainland on 11 June 2013 together with Gary Emich
- at the age of 48, Hurwitz completed his 500th crossing between Alcatraz Island and the San Francisco mainland on 11 June 2009 together with Gary Emich and Pedro Ordenes, the 45th anniversary of the infamous Frank Morris / Anglin Brothers escape in 1962.
- Hurwitz holds the record for the fastest two-way Alcatraz Island at 56 minutes
- Hurwitz has been a member of the South End Rowing Club for 14 years and currently serves on the Club’s board of directors
- Hurwitz has participated in numerous open water swims, including the 10-mile Bay to Breaker swim, the circumnavigation of Manhattan Island, 24-mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim in Florida, Pennock Island in Alaska, the Maui Channel Swim in Hawaii, Swim Around Key West in Florida, the Boston Harbor, and relays across the English Channel and Catalina Channel
- Hurwitz co-founded the Alcatraz Swimming Society (ASS) with Gary Emich
- As of August 2016, Hurwitz has completed over 1,150 crossings from Alcatraz Island
