Skyler Joe Muñatones (born 6 June 1998) is a 28-year-old former water polo player and team captain at the University of California San Diego as well as a pool and open water swimmer. He played water polo for Vanguard Water Polo, Huntington Beach High School and Los Angeles Athletic Club. He is a pool and ocean swimmer and a waterman from Huntington Beach, California.

Heroics

He performed CPR on and saved his father Steven Munatones after having a 'widow maker] heart attack on 15 May 2016. This act was recognized by the American Heart Association on 13 October 2016 and the Greek Life Saving Association.

Ancestors

One of Munatones' ancestors was Don José de Mazarredo y Salazar de Muñatones Cortázar, considered to be one of the best Spanish naval commanders of all time who was born in Bilbao, Spain where the Muñatones Castillo is located. His father (Steven Munatones) played at Harvard University between 1980-1984 and two sisters (Sydney Munatones and Sofia Munatones) currently play water polo for Los Alamitos High School.

  • He competed in the 2-mile Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim in 2024, 2025, 2026.
  • On 1 July 2026, he escorted Steven Munatones on the 73.61 km Swim Shōdoshima in Kagawa, Prefecture, Japan in a cumulative time of 18 hours 22 minutes 49 seconds at the age of 63 together with escort kayaker Chris Morgan, PhD, escort paddler Skyler Munatones, and stand-up paddler Jessie Salas. They started and finished the 6-day stage swim on Angel Road at high tide, sandwiched between two typhoons, observed by Yuko Matsuzaki. It was the first known prone paddle around Shōdoshima.
