The Izu Islands (伊豆諸島 or 伊豆七島) are a group of volcanic islands stretching south and east from the Izu Peninsula of Honshū, Japan that include more than a dozen islands and islets, 9 of which are inhabited.
The Izu islands stretch south-east from the Izu Peninsula on Honshu and include Oshima, Toshima, Niijima (新島), Kozujima, Miyakejima, Hachijojima, Mikurajima, Shikinejima and Aogashima. Each of the island has its unique character, clear water and areas for open water swimming.
Prison Islands[edit]
During the Edo period, Nii-jima (新島), Miyake-jima, and Hachijō-jima served as places of exile for criminals.
