noun - Professional marathon swimmers are long distance swimmers who compete in marathon swimming competitions or on the pro circuit for prize money. They compete in races sanctioned or organized by various entities including the former World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation, the former International Marathon Swimming Association, or the currently FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix or the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup. Thomas Lurz and Ashley Twichell are examples of these types of athletes.

Many professional marathon swimmers were members of the World Professional Marathon Swimmers Federation or the International Marathon Swimming Association.
