Styles

Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports with varied distances conducted in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, individual medley, and relays (either freestyle or medley relay). A medley relay consists of four swimmers who each swim a different stroke in the following order: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.

Governance

Competitive swimming is governed at the local, regional, national, and international level. World Aquatics, formerly FINA, currently recognizes races and world records in the following events for both men and women"

• Freestyle: 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m
• Backstroke: 50m, 100m, 200m
• Breaststroke: 50m, 100m, 200m
• Butterfly: 50m, 100m, 200m
• Individual medley: 100m (short course only), 200m, 400m
• Relays: 4×50 m freestyle relay (short course only), 4×100m freestyle, 4×200m freestyle, 4×50m medley relay (short course only), 4×100m medley
• Mixed relays (teams of two men and two women): 4×50m mixed freestyle (short course only), 4×100m mixed freestyle (long course only), 4×50m mixed medley (short course only), 4×100m mixed medley (long course only)
