Dr. Mark Smitherman completes the English Channel en route to achieving the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the Grand Slam of Open Water Swimming
Dr. Mark Smitherman (born 12 January 1958), whose nickname is Magoo, is a 60-year-old American marathon swimmer from Clearwater, Florida. He is a member of the Half Century Club who has completed 2 channels of the Oceans Seven.
Open Water Swimming Career
- On 18 June 2011, he finished 6th at 20.1 km FKCC Swim Around Key West in Florida in 4 hours 59 minutes 15 seconds at the age of 53.
- He achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the Grand Slam of Open Water Swimming in 2015
- On 20 April 2013, she finished 4th in 37 km Tampa Bay Marathon Swim in Florida in 12 hours 33 minutes at the age of 55.
- On 29 September 2013, he finished 2nd in the 19.3 km Swim Around Charleston in South Carolina in 4 hours 39 minutes 22 seconds at the age of 55.
- On 14 June 2014, he finished 12th in the 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 8 hours 10 minutes 50 seconds at the age of 56.
- On 26 September 2014, he completed a crossing of the Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to the California mainland in 11 hours 52 minutes 43 seconds at the age of 56.
- On 25 September 2015, he completed a crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 12 hours 32 minutes at the age of 57.
- he completed the 2014 Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in 8 hours 10 minutes 50 seconds
- he competed in the 2012 24-mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim that was cancelled due to thunderstorms
- he finished fourth in the 2013 Tampa Bay Marathon Swim at the age of 55
- he finished second in the inaugural 7 km Coquina Key Invitational Swim in St. Petersburg, Florida.
- he was 56 years old when he crossed the Catalina Channel from Catalina Island to the California mainland in 11 hours 52 minutes on 25-26 September 2014 to join the Half Century Club
- he completed a crossing of the English Channel on 25 September 2015 to achieve the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming at the age of 57 in 12 hours 32 minutes
- he completed In Search of Memphre, a 25-mile border-crossing swim in Lake Memphremagog between Vermont in the USA and Magog in Quebec, Canada in 13 hours 46 minutes and 30 seconds on 11 September 2016.
- Between 25-28 April 2018, he completed all four stage swims of the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona (9.5-mile or 15.2 km Saguaro Lake + 9-mile or 14.4 km Canyon Lake + 17-mile or 27.3 km Apache Lake + 6.2-mile or 10 km Roosevelt Lake), finishing 10th overall at the age of 60 in a cumulative time of 16 hours 49 minutes 22.2 seconds.
- He finished fifth overall in the Saguaro Lake crossing on 25 April 2018 finishing in 3 hours 26 minutes 33.6 seconds.
