International Marathon Swimming Association

noun - International Marathon Swimming Association (IMSA, previously called the IMSF or International Marathon Swimming Federation) was established in 1991 and is a now-defunct professional marathon swimming association that was created to promote and support a global professional marathon swimming circuit.
Establishment
On 19 July 1991, the International Marathon Swimming Federation was established by incorporating the International Long Distance Swimming Federation (ILDSF) and the World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation (WPMSF). Members included Lello Barbuto (former President of the ILDSF and President representing the Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli) was elected as President of the IMSF with Jean-Guy Gringras (President of the Traversée Internationale du lac Memphrémagog) and Nelson Cadena (President of the Bahia Marathon in Brazil) being elected as Vice Presidents. Dick van der Laan (former Secretary of the WPMSF) was elected as Treasurer and Roger Parsons (Honorary Secretary of the FINA Long Distance Swimming Commission) was elected to the post of General Secretary of the IMSF.
In addition to the promoters and race directors, Diego Degano of Argentina (athlete's representative), Shelley Taylor-Smith of Australia (athlete's representative), Marcelo Micocci of Argentina (representing the Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe - Coronda), Jim Whelan of the USA (representing the Atlantic City Around the Island Swim), and Tom Hoad of Australia (who served as Chairman of the FINA 6th World Swimming Championships in Perth in 1991) attended the meeting in Magog, Québec, Canada.
Later FINA requested a name change to the International Marathon Swimming Association (as the word "Federation" caused a clash inside FINA).
History
The IMSA was preceded by the International Long Distance Swimming Federation (ILDSF founded in Paris, France in 1953) and the World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation (WPMSF), and was succeeded the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix pro circuit on 19 July 1991 at a general meeting in Magog, Quebec, Canada.
