Hell Gate

From Openwaterpedia

Hell Gate or Hell's Gate, a corruption of the Dutch phrase Hellegat, which could mean either "bright strait" or "clear opening", is a narrow tidal strait in the East River in New York City in the United States. It separates Astoria, Queens from Randall's and Wards Islands (formerly two separate islands, now joined by landfill) and is part of the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, now renamed as the 20 Bridges Manhattan Island Swim run by New York Open Water.

Open Water Swimming[edit]

Ida Elionsky swam through the channel with her arms and feet shackled in a swim in September 1915.
