George Haines

George Haines was an American swimming coach and the 1989 recipient of the Glen S. Hummer Award recipient, an award given to the individual who makes the greatest contribution to the open water swimming in the United States.

The great Olympic Coach, always supported the AAU and USS Open Water Programs. As a coach for Santa Clara, he was Penny Dean’s coach early in her career, and encouraged her to participate in her first AAU Long Distance Championship. Being the total coach, he always encouraged swimmers to participate in events that best suited their individual skills.
