Firas Moualla (born 25 November 1971) [note: also spelled Feras Mouala, Feras Moualla, Firas Malla, or Mhaida Muala or Firas Muala, or in Arabic it is written فراس معلا) is a graduate of Damascus University and a Syrian open water swimmer. He is currently the Secretary General of the Syrian Olympic Committee and President of the Syrian Arab Swimming and Aquatic Sports Federation.

Honors[edit]

  • In 2012 he received the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid AL MAKTOUM Creative Sports Award, which is recognized by the IOC.
  • He received the General Sports Federation's, Highest Sports Authority in Syria, Silver Order, which is the highest award in Syria.
  • He was honored by meeting the Syrian Arab Republic's president Dr. Bashar Alassad for his sporting achievements and long athletic career.

Open Water Swimming Career[edit]

  • He finished third in the 45-49 age group division at the 2017 FINA World Masters Championships 3 km open water swim in Lake Balaton, Hungary in 40:40.1 on 12 August 2017, swimming for Aljaish Sport Club.
  • Moualla swam 124 km (77 miles) between Cyprus Island in Europe to Latakia City (Arabic: اللَاذِقِيَّة) in Asia at the age of 36 after one unsuccessful attempt on 11 September 2007 to join the 24-hour Club. The swim took 42 hours 0 minutes on 22 September 2007 from the north point of Cyprus, Cape Andreas where he left on Thursday evening and finished at Latakia on a Saturday morning.
  • Moualla completed a 24-hour 80 km swim in the swimming pool before Cyprus - Latakia swim as a trial
  • Moualla was the Asian open water swimming champion in 2002
  • Moualla dominated the inter-Arab long-distance swimming championships during the period of 1991 to 2004
  • Moualla finished fourth in the world swimming championship in 1998 in Japan
  • Moualla performed strongly in marathon swimming competitions in Canada, Argentina and Croatia
  • Moualla swum the two-way relay crossing of the English Channel in 20 hours with his two brothers Hammam Mouala and Mousaab Mouala and his sister Rudaina Mouala on 18 August 2001
  • Moualla has the 20th fastest time in history in the 16 km Faros Maratón in Croatia in 3 hours 14 minutes and was the 1996 champion

  • Moualla: 1991 Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli - 14th place in 7 hours 24 minutes

  • Moualla: 1996 FINA Open Water Swimming World Championship in France, fifth place (Individual) and fourth in team event (together with Mousaab Mouala, and Lubna Mouala).
  • Moualla: 1996 88 km Maratón Internacional Hernandarias – Parana - 6th place
  • Moualla: 1996 Maratón Acuática Internacional Ciudad de Rosario - 5th place
  • Moualla: 1998 Japan FINA World Cup - 4th place
  • Moualla: 2000 Marathon de la Relieve in lac St Jean, Quebec, Canada - 1st place
  • Moualla: 2002 Asia Championship (5 km) - 1st place in Qatar.
  • Moualla: 2004 Asia Championship (5 km) - 2nd place in Kuwait
  • Moualla: 1995 and 1996 International Nile Race - 1st place
  • Moualla: 1997 and 1998 International Nile Race - 3rd place
  • Moualla: 1999 Alexandria International Race - 2nd place
  • Moualla: 2000-2001 Arab universities champion
  • On 9 July 1989, he finished 30th in the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli in Italy in 10 hours 2 minutes 33 seconds.
  • On 5 July 1990, he finished 34th in the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli in Italy in 9 hours 45 minutes 55 seconds.
  • On 6 July 1991, he finished 37th in the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli in Italy in 9 hours 43 minutes 30 seconds.
  • On 5 July 1992, he finished 39th in the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli in Italy in 9 hours 34 minutes 2 seconds.
