Edward Riley is a 61-year-old American open water swimmer from New York who is a member of the Half Century Club.

Open Water Swimming Career

  • He competed in the inaugural Cold Water Challenge, a 2.6-mile jetty-to-jetty ocean swim in Penfield Beach in Fairfield, Connecticut.
  • He competed in four stages of the 2014 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York.
    • On 18 June 2014, he completed the 29.5 km stage of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 5 hours 3 minutes 27 seconds at the age of 55.
    • On 19 June 2014, he completed the 31.9 km stage of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 7 hours 10 minutes 51 seconds at the age of 55.
    • On 20 June 2014, he completed the 21.2 km stage of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 4 hours 4 minutes 25 seconds at the age of 55.
    • On 21 June 2014, he completed the 24.1 km stage of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 5 hours 10 minutes 8 seconds at the age of 55.
  • On 27 June 2016, he completed the 31.9 km Stage 2 The Lighthouses from the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge to the Mid-Hudson Bridge of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 9 hours 4 minutes 42 seconds at the age of 57 finishing 3rd overall.
  • On 30 July 2016, he completed the 16.1 km Kingdom Swim in Vermont in 4 hours 59 minutes 38 seconds at the age of 57.
  • On 17-18 September 2016, he participated in the 32-mile (51.1 km) crossing of Lake George in New York at the Lake George Marathon Swim in New York.
  • On 22 April 2017, he completed the 11.2 km Swim Around Lido Key in Florida in 3 hours 53 seconds at the age of 58.
  • He completed all 7 stages of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York on 15-22 June 2017.
    • Stage 1 The Islands from Rip Van Winkle Bridge to Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge on 15 June in 5 hours 38 minutes 18 seconds finishing 6th overall.
    • Stage 2 The Lighthouses from Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge to Mid-Hudson Bridge on 16 June in 7 hours 34 minutes 18 seconds finishing 9th overall.
    • Stage 3 The Hudson Valley from Mid-Hudson Bridge To Newburgh Beacon Bridge on 17 June in 4 hours 14 minutes 21 seconds finishing 6th overall.
    • Stage 4 The Highlands from Newburgh Beacon Bridge To Bear Mountain Bridge on 18 June in 6 hours 9 minutes 25 seconds finishing 11th overall.
    • Stage 5 The Great Bays from Bear Mountain Bridge to Tappan Zee Bridge on 20 June in 8 hours 6 minutes 36 seconds finishing 8th overall.
    • Stage 6 The Great Bays from Tappan Zee Bridge to George Washington Bridge on 21 June in 3 hours 52 minutes 38 seconds finishing 9th overall.
    • Stage 7 Liberty from George Washington Bridge to Verrazano Narrows Bridge (18.6 miles) in 6 hours 2 minutes 44 seconds finishing 8th overall.
  • On 1 October 2017, he completed the 19.3 km Swim Around Charleston in South Carolina in 5 hours 17 minutes 31 seconds at the age of 59.
  • He won the 25m freestyle and finished 4th in the 50m freestyle and 3rd in the 25m breaststroke at the United States Winter Swimming National Championships on 11 February 2018 at the New York City Aquarium Education Hall in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.
  • Between 25-28 April 2018, he completed all four stage swims of the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona (9.5-mile or 15.2 km Saguaro Lake + 9-mile or 14.4 km Canyon Lake + 17-mile or 27.3 km Apache Lake + 6.2-mile or 10 km Roosevelt Lake), finishing 12th overall at the age of 59 in a cumulative time of 17 hours 53 minutes 38.8 seconds.
  • On 8 June 2019, he finished 8th in the 29.4 km The Islands stage swim of the 193 km 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim along the Hudson River in New York finishing in 5 hours 28 minutes 3 seconds at the age of 61.
  • He completed the 26.4 km Sri Chinmoy Marathon Swim from Rapperswil to Zurich in Lake Zurich, Switzerland in 2018 in 9 hours 59 minutes 5 seconds, at the age of 60.
