'Au I Nā Mokupuni 'Ekolu swim in the Pailolo Channel, Kalohi Channel, and Auau Channel in the State of Hawaii

Dr. Steven Minaglia (born 15 February 1973) is a 49-year-old American channel swimmer who lives in Kaneohe, Hawaii. He competes in marathon swims nationally and internationally and is a member of the University of Hawaii Masters Swim Club.

Professional Career

He is an Associate Professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii and is a double board-certified specialist in both Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of the American Urogynecologic Society.

Hawaiian channel crossings

• 7-9 September 2018 he organized and completed the Second Annual ʻAu I Nā Mokupuni ʻEkolu Swim Challenge, a 3-day, 3-channel crossing among the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai in the state of Hawaii. 6 swimmers completed the challenge. Results are available at Endurance Challenge.
• On 21-23 October 2017 he organized and completed the First Annual ʻAu I Nā Mokupuni ʻEkolu Swim Challenge, a 3-day, 3-channel crossing among the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. 5 swimmers completed the challenge.
• On 19 January 2014, Dr. Minaglia completed a double crossing of the Auau Channel after swimming from Lanai to Maui to Lanai. He departed just east of the Lanai Club at 3:59 in the morning and returned to nearly the same location at 2:32 in the afternoon, after swimming to a beach just east of Lahaina Harbor. The double crossing was completed in 10 hours and 33 minutes. The original intent was to complete a triple cross of the channel, however the swim ended just 3 miles into the third leg due to multiple factors. The path of the swim was approximately 22 miles.
• On 10 January 2014, just days before his double crossing of the Auau Channel, Dr. Minaglia was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, a condition in which episodes of fast heart rate (called tachycardia) occur because of an abnormal extra electrical pathway in the heart. The condition was successfully treated at The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii on 14 February 2014 with a procedure known as intracardiac ablation.
• On 30 November 2013, Dr. Minaglia returned to where he started at D.T. Fleming Beach Park on the West side of Maui to become the first person to complete a two-way crossing of the Pailolo Channel and the third person in history to swim from Molokai to Maui. He departed earlier that morning in the dark and completed the nearly 19-mile swim in 11 hours 10 minutes.
• Dr. Minaglia also crossed the 9.3-mile Kalohi Channel in 5 hours 48 minutes with Craig Coombs (6 hours 6 minutes) of the South End Rowing Club in San Francisco and Scott Harvey M.D. (5 hours 48 minutes) between the Hawaiian islands of Molokai and Lanai on 12 May 2012 and the 9-mile Pailolo Channel from the island of Maui to the island of Molokai on 4 February 2012. They departed at DT Fleming Beach on Maui at 6:42 am and finished on Molokai just over 6 hours later.
• Prior to the above channel crossings, Dr. Minaglia swam the 8.9-mile (14.3 km) Auau Channel channel from the island of Maui to the island of Lanai on 4 September 2011 only one day after competing in the annual Maui Channel Swim. He departed near Mala Wharf on Maui at 7:00 am and finished on Lanai just over 5 hours later.
• On 27 April 2019, he had the 9th fastest cumulative time of 16:49:43.3 in the 2019 SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona.
  • On 24 August, he finished 8th overall in the 15.2 km Saguaro Lake stage swim of the 4-day SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 3:36:50.3.
  • On 25 August, he finished 14th in the 14.4 km Canyon Lake stage swim of the 4-day SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 3:25:05.1.
  • On 26 April 2019, he finished 14th in the 27.3 km stage across Apache Lake on Day 3 of the 4-day S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge in Arizona in 6:41:31.4 at the age of 46.
  • On 26 April 2019, he finished 7th in the 10 km stage across Roosevelt Lake on Day 4 of the 4-day S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge in Arizona in 3:06:16.5 at the age of 46.
• On 12-15 September 2019, he will compete in the 2019 ʻAu I Nā Mokupuni ʻEkolu Swim Challenge, a 3-day 3-stage ocean channel swim in Hawaii where swimmers swim across 3 Hawaiian channels in 3 days.
• On 31 August 2019, he finished 5th in the 45.9 km 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan Island in New York City in 7 hours 18 minutes 22 seconds at the age of 46.
• On 8 August 2020, he completed a 27.3 km crossing of the Kaulakahi Channel from Kauai to Niihau in 12 hours 38 minutes.
• On 27-29 August 2021, he completed the ʻAu I Nā Mokupuni ʻEkolu Swim Challenge, a 3-day, 3-channel crossing among the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai in the state of Hawaii, together with Mark Spratt, Edie Markovich, Lauren Grous, and Dan Worden.
• Between March and 6 November 2022, he completed a 206.47 (128.3-mile) non-continuous stage swim together with Marek Lehocky around the island of Oahu, a 24-stage clockwise circumnavigation swim around the island of Oahu that started and finished on Kaimana Beach near the Diamond Head volcano, at the age of 49.

Professional Career

Steven Minaglia, MD, MBA, FACS, FACOG, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery and Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health of the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawaii. He is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of the American Urogynecologic Society. His regular series Journal Club and Podcasts appear monthly among the journal’s many online collections. Locally, he serves as the Director of Robotic Surgery at the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children located in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Minaglia holds both the AB and MD degrees from the University of Chicago, where his undergraduate major was in the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine. He completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and a 3-year fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Southern California. He is double board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology in General Obstetrics & Gynecology and Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery. More recently, he received the MBA degree from the University of Hawaii.

Dr. Minaglia specializes in vaginal and laparoscopic surgical approaches to treat uterine and vaginal prolapse, as well as advanced care for urinary and fecal incontinence. He is an internationally recognized speaker on the topic of pelvic floor disorders in women and has addressed such diverse audiences as medical societies, hospital administrations, and patient advocacy groups all over the world. His writing and research appears in several publications including Obstetrics and Gynecology, The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, The International Urogynecology Journal, and the Journal of Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Steven Minaglia and Marek Lehocky finished the Oahu Circumnavigation Swim on 6 November 2022 after swimming 24 stage swims around Oahu totaling 206.4 km.
