Dr. Osama Ahmed Momtaz is an Egyptian open water swimmer who was inducted in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2007 as an Honour Swimmer.
Open Water Swimming Career Highlights
- On 22 July 1984, he completed a two-way crossing of the English Channel from England to France to England in 21 hours 37 minutes (10 hours 15 minutes on the first leg + 11 hours 22 minutes on the second leg) at the age of 23. He did an 8-hour, 12-hour, 16-hour, and three 24-hour qualification swims to be selected to represent Egypt in a two-way crossing attempt. He was mentored by Captain Nabil ElShazly IMSHOF Honour Swimmer and Egyptian National Coach.
- In 1979, he completed Windermere with IMSHOF Honour Swimmer David Morgan as crew.
- In 1988, he completed the Traversée Internationale du lac Memphrémagog swim in Canada - and was part of the Atlantic City Around the Island Swim which was call off due to severe conditions.
- In 1984, he attempted a 32.3 km crossing of the Catalina Channel.
- He received the 1986 National Award of Excellency in Sport awarded by Egyptian President Mohamed Hosney Mubarak.
- He served on the board of directors of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.
- He competed in a 15 km marathon swim in Egypt in 1975.
- He competed in a 20 km marathon swim in the Nile River in Egypt.
- He competed in a 30 km marathon swim in the Suez Canal in Egypt.
- He competed in international races in Ismalia, Alexandria, and Suez Canal between 36-40 km in distance.
- He competed in the Italian marathon swimming circuit in Venizia-San Marco, Bacoli, and Ischia.
- He competed in Pisfor and Gerne in Turkey.
