Daniel Anhua Fung, M.D. is an American open water swimmer and triathlete from San Francisco, California. He achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming in 2015 and has participated in a number of triathlons.

The Physician

Dr Fung is double board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Interventional Pain Medicine. He is a specialist in the non-surgical care of Spine, Musculoskeletal, Sports and Pain disorders. Dr. Fung has specialized training in interventional spine and pain procedures including epidural injections, radiofrequency ablation, nerve blocks, intradiscal treatments, platelet rich plasma injections, stem cell therapies, joint and soft tissue injections, neuromodulation and intrathecal drug delivery. Dr. Fung is also trained in electrodiagnostic studies and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring.

Dr. Fung began his studies at the University of California, Berkeley where he graduated with a major in Biochemistry and minor in Business Administration. He then went on and earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, completed his surgical internship at University of California San Diego, residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UCLA, and fellowship training in Pain Medicine at the University of Southern California. He currently practices medicine at The Center for Spine and Joint Restoration in Santa Monica and Los Angeles, California. Dr. Fung is a clinical instructor at the UCLA affiliated VA Greater Los Angeles Health System PM&R Residency Program.

The Athlete

Dr Fung is a competitive age group triathlete, open water swimmer and endurance athlete. Yearly he competes in multiple Olympic, Half Ironman and Ironman distance triathlon races. He has made it onto the age group winner’s podium of many races including a first place age group finish at the San Francisco Nike Marathon, 4th place finish in the Los Angeles International Triathlon and many other triathlon, open water swimming and running events. Aside from his triathlon accomplishments, Dr. Fung is also a marathon runner who has qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon and an ultra marathon open water swimmer. His biggest ultra marathon swimming achievements include being the 192nd person in history to swim across the 20.2-mile Catalina Channel, completing the 28.5 mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, and English Channel to become the 110th person to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. He is a Lifetime Member of the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association.
