The Cyprus Israel Relay swimmers are helping organize and will participate in the 2017 Pan-American Colibrí Swim between Imperial Beach, California, USA and Playas de Tijuana Mexico, a 10 km cross-border swim and example of Speedo diplomacy by a group of ocean swimmers from five nations with the purpose to raise awareness and funds for the Colibri Center for Human Rights in the Pacific Ocean

The Cyprus Israel Swim (Cyprus to Israel Open Water Swim) is a 6-person relay that set the world record for the longest open water swimming relay with its 380 km (236-mile) non-stop swim from Cyprus to Israel. For 123 hours 10 minutes (5 days 3 hours 10 minutes), the 6 swimmers each took 21 legs to break the previous record held by California's Night Train Swimmers.

The first Cyprus Israel Swim in 2013 was aborted due to poor weather conditions. The second attempt began from Paphos Port Cyprus in Cyprus at 2:20 pm on 5 October 2014 and finished south of Rishon, Israel at 5:30 pm on 10 October 2014.

Conditions of Swim

The first relay began on 15 October 2013, at noon under the following conditions:

  • The swimmers will embark a catamaran yacht in Limassol harbor and sail to the starting point.
  • Each swimmer will swim approximately 10-12 km every day for 5-6 consecutive days.
  • If a swimmer for one reason or another may not be able to continue the journey, the team will decide whether to abandon or to continue with fewer swimmers.

Swimmers

  • Udi Erell (born in 1948) served 23 years in the Navy and manage 2 private companies which he founded to develop satellite-based solutions for vessels at sea - Matys On Board Ltd and Matys Satcom Ltd.
  • Doron Amosi (age 45) is a family physician who does triathlons, marathon runs, and long distance open water swims).
  • Ben Enosh was born in Madison, Wisconsin and grew up in Jerusalem, Israel and Palo Alto, California.
  • Ori Sela is the owner, founder, and manager of Water World and WEST technique. He is a qualified hydro therapist, swimming coach, babies swimming instructor, Watzu, Jahara and shiatsu therapist, triathlon coach, open water swimming coach, therapeutic swimming instructor, and pregnant women coach.
  • Oded Rahav (born in Addis Ababa Ethiopia in 1966) is an entrepreneur and CEO of Patiphon - your music everywhere.
  • Luc Chetboun (born in Strasbourg France in 1968) grew up in Jerusalem and is an open water swimmer, marathon runner, triathlete, and Ironman.

Crew

  • Erez Amir (born 1963) - cook and occasional swimmer. Amir has worked in some of the best restaurants in Israel, the last of which was the "Golden Apple" with Aharoni and Roshfeld as sous-chef and served in the Israeli navy submarines. He is a masters swimmer and sailor who runs a small software company.
  • Nimrod Or (born in Denmark in 1982) - skipper and sailing instructor who served in the navy and is a skipper for Via Maris Yacht Club.
  • Uri Brown (age 54) - operations crew who plays drums in a jazz band and works as a supervisor for variety maritime solutions and operational layout design.
  • Ronen Lazar - paramedic.

The Cyprus Israel Relay Swim is nominated for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year.

"Six valiant men and their tireless support crew went for it back in 2013. Their goal? To swim an unprecedented relay from Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea to their native Israel. Udi Erell, Doron Amosi, Ben Enosh, Ori Sela, Oded Rahav and Luc Chetboun gave it their best shot. For 60 hours, the optimistic, visionary team struggled against the high seas with 25-knot winds and waves building past 2 meters. But Mother Nature won round one when safety became a major concern. But the men never gave up and attempted an even longer 377 km course from Cyprus to Israel in October. Despite security concerns in Gaza, the pioneers braved the seas and finished in a cumulative 123 hours 10 minutes, swimming through 5 full days and nights to set history’s 6-person distance relay record. For their courage and commitment to each other, for their stamina and strength at sea, for their desire to help raise awareness for clean seas, the Cyprus Israel Swim is a worthy nominee for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year."

Dead Sea Swim


Participating open water swimmers in the 16 km group tandem swim called the Dead Sea Swim between Jordan and Israel across the Dead Sea on 15 November 2016 that took 7 hours 9 minutes included Udi Erell, Adina Faur, Kimberley Chambers, Abigail Thomson, Avishag Turek, Ori Sela, Oded Rahav, Juandre Human, Jean Craven, Evan Feldman, Ben Enosh, Doron Amosi, Munqeth Mehyar, Brooke Penney, Dov Litvinoff, Nick Papageorge, Samuel Moran, Luc Chetboun, Karon Marx, Neil Macaskill, Herman van der Westhuizen, Hylton Lokitch, Gita Osrin, Ram Barkai, Erez Amir, Yussuf Muhammad Ahmad Matari, Olfat Haider, Rachel Sharon Lane, Qusai Abdullah khalaf Al-louzi, Ahmed khalil ahmad murad, and Jackie Cobell. Members were from South Africa's Madswimmer group and the Cyprus Israel Relay Team.
