Coronado Island

Coronado, since the 1980s also mistakenly known as Coronado Island, is a resort city located in San Diego County, California, across and around San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego. Its on the geographic combination of an island and a tombolo connected to the mainland called the Silver Strand. Coronado is a tied island, connected by a tombolo.
Award
In 2012, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research, ranked Coronado Beach as the best beach in the United States.
Name
Coronado is Spanish for "crowned one", and thus it is nicknamed The Crown City.
Open Water Swimming
- A 28.5 km (11.7-mile) open water swimming competition was once held around Coronado Island between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay that was discontinued.
- 2nd Annual SEAL Memorial Swim is held around Coronado Island n honor of fallen Naval Special Warfare Operators.
