It is site of open water swimming events, including the Coniston Regatta, and shore-to-shore solo swimming challenges of 5.25 miles.
Andrew Heather Description for Outdoor Swimming Society
There are many places to enter Coniston although you will need to stay near the edge in to avoid the many boats, dinghies and sailboards. The more adventurous can swim for miles along the lake and even when it's busy a secluded spot can be found, especially if you don't have to stay near a parked car. But beware the busy, narrow road.
