Clay Evans
Clay Evans is the founder and head coach of the Southern California Aquatic Masters Swim Club (SCAQ) and Olympic medalist in the 100m butterfly at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Evans was born in South America to Canadian parents. Clay moved to Huntington Beach, California at 15 and was recruited by UCLA on a swimming and water polo scholarship.
Swimming Career
Before entering UCLA, Clay represented Canada in the 1976 Munich Olympics. He was a four year All-American and NCAA finalist in the 100 butterfly and an Olympic silver medallist at the Montreal Olympics. Clay has broken over 40 Masters National and World records during his career.
Coaching
Evans is the current director of SCAQ, one of the largest masters swimming teams in the world. After graduating from UCLA, Clay began his coaching career with Team Santa Monica while he was in graduate school in Architecture. After practicing Architecture in Europe and Saudi Arabia, Clay returned to West Los Angeles and concentrated on developing SCAQ into the largest masters swimming program in the U.S., both in the pool and open water. He has conducted open water swimming competitions and clinics throughout Southern California.
Honors
- In 1993, Clay was selected as the United States Masters Swimming Coach of the Year.
- In 1999, Clay was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Masters Aquatic Coaches Association.
Sunset Swim Series
Evans organizes the annual Sunset Swim Series offered by SCAQ at Santa Monica Beach and Hermosa Beach at 6 pm on Friday evenings.
