Jo O-Ryeon

Jo O-Ryeon (조 오련, Cho Oh-Ryun, Cho Oh-Yun in Korean) is a competitive pool and open water swimmer from Korea, nicknamed The Asian Seal (born 5 October 1952, died 4 August 2009). In 2003 Jo served on the Korean Olympic Committee.

Pool Swimming Career

In addition to his Olympic performances (400m and 1500m freestyle in 1972) Jo O-Ryeon won gold medals in the 400m and 1500m freestyle events at the 1970 and 1974 Asian Games.

Open Water Swimming Career

  • He swam 48 km between Korea and Japan in 1980 in 13 hours 16 minutes and was awarded the Chreongryong Medal in 1980.
  • In 1982, he swam the English Channel, crossing from England to France in 9 hours 35 minutes.
  • In 2005, he swam 87.4 km from Ulleungdo to Dokdo
  • In 2003, he swam the Strait of Han in Korea
  • In 2006, he swam 33 times around Dokdo
