Charles Chapman Sr. was a member of The Committee that supported the English Channel crossing of his son Charles Chapman, Jr.. Chapman was the first black man to swim across the English Channel in 1981 who completed a number of other unprecedented all-butterfly open water swims.
Charles Chapman, Jr.'s Open Water Swimming Career Highlights
- On 25 August 1981, he completed a crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 12 hours 30 minutes at the age of 27.
- In 1983, he completed the first butterfly swim around Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park in San Francisco Bay, California.
- On 27 August 1988, he completed the first butterfly circumnavigation swim in the 45.8 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 9 hours 25 minutes 8 seconds.
- On 19 August 1989, he completed the 45.8 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 9 hours 35 minutes 21 seconds at the age of 35.
