Cath Pendleton was a Polar Zero Ice Mile record-setting member of the Antarctica 2020 International Swim, a series of solo ice swimming challenges and environmental swims inside the Antarctic Circle (66°33′46.5″ south) that was nominated for the 2020 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year

Catherine Pendleton, known as The Merthyr Mermaid, is a 50-year-old Welsh open water swimmer specializing in ice swimming from Sennybridge, Wales.

Ice Miles

  • 1st Ice Mile: On 30 January 2016, she completed an Ice Mile in Keepers Pond, Blaenavon, Wales in 4.40°C water and 2.40°C air temperature, covering 1.15 miles in 39:16.
  • 2nd Ice Mile: On 4 February 2017, she completed an Ice Mile in Eastern Bay, Lough Dan, Ireland in 4.53°C water and 9.00°C air temperature, covering 1.00 mile in 35:06.
  • 3rd Ice Mile: On 6 January 2018, she completed an Ice Mile in Hatfield, England in 4.10°C water and 3.50°C air temperature, covering 1.00 mile in 35:00.

  • 9th Ice Mile: On 19 February 2022, she completed an Ice Mile in Lake Worthersee, Klagenfurt, Austria in 4.17°C water and 7.00°C air temperature, covering 1.00 mile in 35:12 at 435m altitude at 46.62°N.

  • 1st Ice Kilometer: On 20 February 2016 at the IISA Great Britain IK in Andark Lake, Southampton, UK, she completed an Ice Kilometer in 19:24 in 5.00°C water and 0.00°C air temperature.
  • 2nd Ice Kilometer: On 21 January 2017 at the World Cup, Polish Championships in Katowice, Pland, she completed an Ice Kilometer in 21:47 in 1.50°C water and 0.00°C air temperature.
  • 3rd Ice Kilometer: On 11 February 2017 at the Ice Cup & GB Ice Swimming Championships in The Cruin, Loch Lomond, she completed an Ice Kilometer in 25:23 in 4.20°C water and 0.90°C air temperature.
  • 4th Ice Kilometer: On 21 January 2018 at the Dutch open ice swimming in Zwembad Waterdam, Volendam, Netherlands, she completed an Ice Kilometer in 19:41:37 in 3.60°C water and 0.30°C air temperature.
  • 5th Ice Kilometer: On 25 February 2018 at the IISA GB Championships in Hatfield Outdoor Activity Center, UK, she completed an Ice Kilometer in 19:39:25 in 3.60°C water and 1.10°C air temperature.
  • 6th Ice Kilometer: On 18 March 2019 at the International Ice Swimming Association World Championship in Murmansk, Russia, she completed an Ice Kilometer in 20:09:47 in 0.00°C water and -6.30°C air temperature.
  • On 28 December 2019 at the Amstel Ice Swim in Amsterdam, Netherlands, she swam 1000m in 23:29:60 in 5.30°C water.

2020 WOWSA Awards - 2020 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year Nomination

Pendleton participated in the Antarctica 2020 International Swim that was nominated for the 2020 WOWSA Awards in the World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year category with the following nomination: The Southern Ocean is at the bottom of the world surrounding the continent of Antarctica. Inhospitable to humans, but remarkably, Ger Kennedy organized a series of ice swims accessible around the ice-covered tundra to some of the most hardened ice swimmers on the planet. Antarctica 2020 International Swim was held inside the Antarctic Circle to celebrate Lynne Cox's pioneering Antarctica swim in 2002 and enable people to swim short distances or Polar Ice Miles. From Argentina, the Polar Swimming Quest set off by ship and stopped in the Bellingshausen Sea and the Weddell Sea over a few weeks. 12 swimmers entered the cold waters of Antarctica with bioprene only with three major swims safely recorded. Cath Pendleton set a world record in Hanusse Bay with a 32:54 Zero Ice Mile in 0.03°C water and -3.2°C air. Paul Eugen Dorin Georgescu set another world record in Hanusse Bay in 0.0°C water with 22 minute 44 second Zero Ice Mile. Two days later, Ger Kennedy swam another Zero Ice Mile in Paradise Bay in 0.53°C water and -1.10°C air in 34 minutes 2 seconds. For safely organizing swims by Kathryn Pratschke, Redy Redfern, Dee Newell, Jane Hardy, Tiffiny Quinn, Michelle White, Una Campbell, Martina Ring, Anne O'Donovan, Matías Ola, and Alice Kelliher in Antarctica with the help of Sean Cullen and Dimcea Lulian Zamfir, for encouraging marine conservation awareness while encountering challenging conditions, and for enabling the extension of the known physical boundaries for everyone involved, the Antarctica 2020 International Swim by Ger Kennedy is a worthy nominee for the 2020 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year.

In a most unusual year, Catherine Pendleton, known as The Merthyr Mermaid, found an equally unusual path to become famous. Her quiet, matter-of-fact ambitions in cold water swimming, her eloquent, easy-to-grasp descriptions of her adventures in the Southern Ocean of Antarctica and inside the Polar Circle in Russia, her realistic understanding of the difficult challenges that she set for herself, and her passionate dedication to acclimate properly to The Ice was more than sufficient for her to become the protagonist in a BBC One documentary film. In January, the 48-year-old completed her 7th Ice Mile in Morocco and then, in March, became the first person to complete a Zero Ice Mile in 0.03°C water and -3.20°C air in 32 minutes 54 seconds in Antarctica. Kendal Mountain Festival

She was a featured speaker at the 2021 Kendal Mountain Festival where she was introduced as the ice swimming and marathon swimming and English Channel swimming star of BBC 'Our Lives' documentary 'The Merthyr Mermaid' who set a Guinness World Record as the first female to swim a mile inside the Antarctic Polar Circle.
