noun - A bootleg swimmer is an individual who attempts or does a rogue swim, pirate swim or bandit swim.

Competitive Bootleg Swimmers[edit]

Competitive bootleg swimmers are open water swimmers who do not purposefully pay the requisite fees or adhere to the registration procedures, but participate in an open water swimming competition or an open water swimming charity event. Competitive rogue swimmers can also include individuals who use another swimmer's name or a false name to purposefully enter an open water swimming event or charity swim.

Channel Rogue Swimmers[edit]

Channel bootleg swimmers are open water swimmers who do not purposefully pay the requisite fees or adhere to the registration procedures of established and governed swims, but attempt a marathon swim or a channel swim anyway while ignoring the traditions and procedures of the recognized governing body. Channel rogue swimmers also refers to an open water swimmer who purposefully preempts a publicly announced marathon swim or channel swim of an unprecedented course or attempt by another swimmer.
