Joseph Robert “Bob” Gruneisen, Long Beach Wilson High School coach and teacher
Joseph Robert “Bob” Gruneisen (14 May 1934 – 6 February 2012) was an American swimming and water polo coach from Long Beach, California. He attended Long Beach City College, then graduated from California State University, Long Beach for his Bachelors degree and Master’s Degree in Education.
Coaching Highlights
- He coached swimming and water polo at Long Beach Wilson High School, starting in 1961 and continuing for over 40 years. He also taught history at Wilson High School after succeeding Pete Archer in aquatics, coaching both water polo and swimming, later focusing heavily as a head swim coach.
- He was credited alongside Klaus Barth with establishing Wilson High's powerhouse aquatic tradition, which includes a decades-long Moore League title streak and numerous Olympic athletes.
- The campus pool at Long Beach Wilson High is named in his honor.
