Gulf of Naples
The Gulf of Naples (Italian: Golfo di Napoli), also called the Bay of Naples, is a roughly 15 km (9.3 mile) gulf located along the southwestern coast of Italy (in the province of Napoli, Campania region). It opens to the west into the Mediterranean Sea and is bordered on the north by the cities of Napoli and Pozzuoli, on the east by Mount Vesuvius, and on the south by the Sorrentine Peninsula and the main town of the peninsula, Sorrento.
The islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida are located in the Gulf of Naples. The area is a tourist destination, with the seaside Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum at the foot of Mount Vesuvius (destroyed in the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius), along the north coast.
Open Water Swimming
Albert Coward and Dr. Chris Stockdale completed a 26.3-mile (42.3 km) crossing from Ischia to Castellammare, Italy in 1986 in 17 hours 48 minutes. Coward is a pioneer of many swims in the Gulf of Naples.
