Dave Barra was the inspiration behind the open water swimming term 'Barraeque' due to his marathon swimming exploits of 2010
adjective - Barrasque means to swim several marathon swims during one specific period (e.g., one summer season or calendar year). Alternatively, it refers to an open water swimming accomplishment that is achievable by only the most talented and committed.
Origin
First used by Steven Munatones in the Daily News of Open Water Swimming in 2010 to describe the accomplishments of American marathon swimmer Dave Barra who completed the following swims, totaling 131.8 cumulative miles (212.1 km), during 2010:
- 17.5-mile Ederle Swim (New York-New Jersey)
- 9.6-mile Maui Channel (Lanai and Maui)
- 24-mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim (Florida)
- 28.5-mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (New York)
- 20.2-mile Catalina Channel (Catalina-California)
- 8-mile Boston Light Swim (Massachusetts)
- 21-mile English Channel (England-France) to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the Grand Slam of Open Water Swimming
- 5 km CIBBOWS Aquarium (New York).
