Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay (Portuguese: Baía da Guanabara) is an oceanic bay located in Southeast Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro. On its western shore lies the city of Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias, and on its eastern shore the cities of Niterói and São Gonçalo. Four other municipalities surround the bay's shores.
Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in area in Brazil at 412 square kilometers (159 sq miles), with a perimeter of 143 kilometers (89 mi). It is 31 kilometers (19 miles) long and 28 kilometres (17 miles) wide at its maximum. Its 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) wide mouth is flanked at the eastern tip by the Pico do Papagaio (Parrot's Peak) and the western tip by Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf).
The name Guanabara comes from the Tupi language, goanã-pará, from gwa "bay", plus nã "similar to" and ba'ra "sea". Traditionally, it is also translated as "the bosom of sea."
There are more than 130 islands dotting the bay and two man-made pools: Piscinão de Ramos and Piscinão de São Gonçalo.
The bay is crossed by the mighty Rio-Niterói Bridge (13.29 kilometers (8.26 miles) long and there is heavy boat and ship traffic, including regular ferryboat lines. The Port of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the city's two airports, Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (on Governador Island) and Santos Dumont Airport (on reclaimed land next to downtown Rio), are located on its shores. The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro main campus is located on the artificial Fundão Island. A maze of smaller bridges seamlessly interconnect the two largest islands, Fundão and Governador, to the mainland.
Environmental Problems
Guanabara Bay's once rich and diversified ecosystem has suffered extensive damage in recent decades, particularly along its mangrove areas. The bay has been heavily impacted by urbanization, deforestation, and pollution of its waters with sewage, garbage, and oil spills.
Toxic Guanabara
Toxic Guanabara is a 10-minute three-part documentary investigation produced and directed by Thiago Da Costa, a film producer and director from Figura Media. The documentary looks into the polluted bay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that threatens athletes on the 2016 Rio Olympics. The film will help sports fans and media around the world to understand the horrific problems of Guanabara Bay where several of the upcoming Olympic events will take place. The pollution levels in the water are prompting Olympians worldwide to withdraw or take medicine before competing. This timely web series investigates the Brazilian government's unkept promise to clean up the bay and examines the issues that affect this once pristine environment.
Toxic Guanabara tackles its subject by focusing on 3 concerned Brazilians citizens and examining their intimate relationships with the beloved and beleaguered bay. The series will be released on 27 July 2016 on Figura Media's YouTube Channel.
