noun - An around-the-pier swim is a out-and-back open water swimming competition around a coastal pier.

The Huntington Beach around-the-pier swim is a charity swim for the local group.

There are many pier-to-pier open water swims and around-the-pier open water swims along the coast of California. Pier-to-pier swims are related to but dissimilar from around-the-pier swims.
