Ariful Islam
Ariful Islam is a Bangladeshi swimmer who competed in the 15 km Saint Martin Island Long Distance Channel Swimming, sponsored and organized by the Bangladesh Swimming Federation and the Bangladesh Life Saving Society under the direction of Md. Golam Mostafa.
The events starts on the longest unbroken sandy beach in the world with gorgeous views of the mountains in Burma off in the distance. The event was nominated for the 2012 World Open Water Swimming Association Performance of the Year.

World Open Water Swimming Awards Nomination
Ten teenagers - 5 boys and 5 girls including some who had never seen the ocean before - completed a 15 km swim across the Bay of Bengal in the Sent Martin Island Long Distance Channel Swimming event to help kick-start the beauty of open water swimming in that tropical part of the world. After starting on Shahpari Island of Teknaf with its insanely long beaches (at 80 km) and finishing on Sent Martin Island, a coral island holiday spot in Bangladesh, all ten swimmers finished the event between 2 - 3 hours. Organized by the Bangladesh Swimming Federation, the swim introduced another part of paradise to the global open water swimming community. For the teenager's joy and enthusiasm in tackling a tough swim of previously unthinkable distance, for the policies and procedures established by the organizers to create a safe swim that can be duplicated by others, the efforts of the 10 teenagers in the Bay of Bengal is a worthy nominee for the 2012 WOWSA Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year.
