noun - The 9 position is the location of an escort paddler or kayaker relative to a marathon swimmer or channel swimmer in an open water swim. The 9 position is when the paddler or kayaker is on the immediate left of the swimmer so the swimmer can see the escort when he/she breathes to the left.
