noun - Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a region where human activity has been placed under some restrictions in the interest of protecting the natural environment, its surrounding waters and the occupant ecosystems, and any cultural or historical resources that may require preservation or management. Marine protected areas' boundaries include some area of ocean, even if it is only a small fraction of the total area of the territory.

Natural or historic marine resources are protected by local, state, territorial, native, regional, or national authorities and may differ substantially from nation to nation. This variation includes different limitations on development, fishing practices, fishing seasons and catch limits, moorings, bans on removing or disrupting marine life of any kind.

As of 2010, the world hosted more than 5,880 MPAs, encompassing 1.17% of the world's oceans.

Marine protected areas are included on the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), which, since 2010 is viewable via Protected Planet, an online interactive search engine hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme's World Conservation Monitoring Center (UNEP-WCMC).

Seven Seas Campaign

Lewis Pugh completed a campaign to call for more MPAs that included 7 different marathon swims in the Seven Seas called the Seven Swims In The Seven Seas For 1 Reason in August 2014.

Five Swims in Antarctica

In February and March 2015, Pugh will attempt at series of five ocean swims in Antarctica in order to have Antarctica's Ross Sea declared a Marine Protected Area that include 1 km swims at Campbell Island at 52º South, Cape Adare at 71º South, Cape Evans at 77.6º South, Bay of Whales at 78.5º South, and Peter 1 Island at 69º South in waters between 0ºC and -1.7ºC.
