- On 6 July 1985, he won the 12.9 km British Long Distance Swimming Association Championship in Torbay in 3 hours 4 minutes 38 minutes at the age of 16.
- On 7 September 1986, he finished 5th in the 16 km Faros Marathon Swim in Croatia in 3 hours 33 minutes 7 seconds at the age of 17.
- he crossed the English Channel 6 times including one time when he was on world record pace until he was held up by the French authorities for 2 hours.
