noun - Manhattan Island Foundation (MIF) was established in 1992 by Morty Berger to govern open water swims around Manhattan Island in New York, U.S.A. It was the successor organization to the Manhattan Island Swimming Association (MISA) that was established in 1982 by Drury Gallagher. The MIF held its first open water swim in 1993. At the current time, open water swims around Manhattan Island are organized by NYC Swim.
