He participated in the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China and won the 2012 Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe - Coronda, a 57 km (35-mile) FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix race held in the Coronda River in Argentina and the Traversée Internationale du lac Memphrémagog in Magog, Quebec, Canada on 3 August 2013. He placed third at the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup at the 59th annual Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean in Roberval, Québec, Canada on 25 July 2013.

Honours[edit]

Hedel won the overall professional marathon swimming title in the 2014 FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix circuit and is nominated for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.

World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year Nomination[edit]

"Joanes Hedel is on the backside of his professional marathon swimming career, but he continues on an upward trajectory and is more successful than ever. He finished all 7 marathon races to capture his first FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix championship…he only won one race, but consistently placed high throughout the circuit at the 57 km Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe - Coronda, 88 km Maratón Hernandarias-Paraná, 15 km Maratón Cancún, 32 km Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean, 34 km Traversée Internationale du lac Memphrémagog, 33 km Ohrid Lake Swim Marathon and 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli. The longer the race and the tougher the conditions, the stronger Hedel becomes. For sticking with the sport, for gradually rising to the top of the longest, most difficult race series in the world, for remaining consistently focused over 295 km of racing in both warm-, cold- and rough water conditions on different continents throughout the year, Joanes Hedel is a worthy nominee for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year."
