Swim 22

Jen Schumacher is a 34-year-old sport psychology consultant from Tarrytown, New York who educates athletes on the mental aspects of achieving excellence in sport. She serves as an Ocean Ambassador with Ocean Recovery Alliance and swims to raise awareness about the health of our oceans and reduce plastic pollution.

Professional Career

She teaches Kinesiology and Sport Psychology classes at California State University, Fullerton and is a Sport Psychology Consultant who educates athletes on the mental aspects of achieving excellence in sport. She works primarily with open water swimmers and credits much of her personal swimming success to her knowledge of the mental game and understanding what it means to be comfortable being uncomfortable. She is passionate about teaching these skills to other athletes and assisting them in their journeys to accomplishing their goals.

She studied at California State University, Fullerton with Dr. Ken Ravizza, Dr. Traci Statler, Dr. Andrea Becker, and Dr. Lenny Wiersma, some of the most esteemed sport psychology consultants in the world.

Schumacher has experience working with a wide variety of athletes, including swimmers, water polo players, triathletes, softball players, soccer players, and wrestlers, at the high school, club, and collegiate level. She works with Jamie Patrick who attempted The Great Lake Swim and The Long Swim.

She credits much of her success in channel swimming to working on her mental game and brings her unique experiences as a marathon swimmer to her sport psychology consulting.

Swimming Bio

• Schumacher grew up as a competitive swimmer for the Irvine Novaquatics. In her college years, Schumacher transitioned to open water swimming, and began marathon swimming.
• On 13 July 2008, she finished 2nd in the 8.4 km Semana Nautica Ocean Swim in Santa Barbara, California in 2 hours 10 minutes 17 seconds at the age of 22.
• On 12 July 2009, she finished 4th in the 8.4 km Semana Nautica Ocean Swim in Santa Barbara, California in 2 hours 29 minutes 17 seconds.
• In 2009, she crossed the Catalina Channel with the fastest female time of the season from Santa Catalina Island to the California mainland.
• In 2010, she crossed the Catalina Channel from the California mainland to Santa Catalina Island as part of the Swim 22 relay with Michael Vovk, Chris Dahowski and David Hartmire on a Contiguous Solo Crossing Relay.
• Schumacher has crossed the Kaulakahi Channel between the island of Kauai and the island of Niihau in Hawaii.
• She crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in April 2012 with Darren Miller, Jamie Patrick and Oliver Wilkinson on a 4-wide.
• She finished second in the 27-mile END-WET in North Dakota on 13 July 2013 under 6 hours 58 minutes at the age of 27.
• On 3 May 2013, she finished 4th in the 22.8 km SCAR Swim Challenge in Apache Lake, Arizona in 5 hours 37 minutes 44 seconds at the age of 27.
• She completed a 28-mile crossing of Santa Monica Bay in Southern California with Forrest Nelson in an unprecedented tandem swim, swimming from Point Dume in Malibu to Lunada Bay in Palos Verdes Peninsula in 13 hours 10 minutes 35 seconds on 16 August 2013.
• She finished fourth in the women's division in the 2014 Mega Colossus in Huntington Beach, California.
• On 4 June 2017, she completed the L14.8 km Chattanooga Swim Fest in Tennessee in 2 hours 17 minutes 49 seconds at the age of 31.
• On 26 August 2017, she finished 7th in the Lake George 10K in New York in 2 hours 59 minutes 54 seconds at the age of 32.
• On 31 August 2019, she finished 3rd in the 45.9 km 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan Island in New York City 7 hours 8 minutes 8 seconds at the age of 34.
• On 18 September 2020, she set a record of the 8 Bridges Stage 4 course from from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to the Bear Mountain Bridges in 3 hours 49 minutes.
• She achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, the 249th person to do so, on 2 August 2021 with an 11 hour 5 minute 33.5 km crossing of the English Channel from England to France.

The Long Swim

Jamie Patrick's support crew on The Long Swim was Jim Patrick, his wife Teresa Patrick, Matt Richardson, Jen Schumacher, Janet Manning, Breanne Melconian, Lynn Kubasek, Asha Allen, Brian Patterson, Keith Metzger, and Morgan Christian. He lasted nearly 18 hours in the water before abandoning his swim at the request and recommendations of his support crew.
