From OpenwaterpediaUnited States Masters Swimming and member of the Mighty Mermaids. She has been a member of USMS since 1982 and swims for New England Masters, with the Granite State Penguins workout group. She is also a member of the all-female over-50 team, Fighting Flamingos (water polo).
Grilli is a member of the Mighty Mermaids, a fantastically fit female group of open water swimmers who have set records and won competitions from coast to coast. They have finished fifth overall in the 2009 Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (7 hours 33 minutes), 24th overall and 2nd fastest female team at the 2008 Trans Tahoe Relay and made names for themselves in numerous individual open water swimming and pool swimming competitions. They also did a 9 hour 19 minute crossing of the Catalina Channel in setting the record for an all-female over-50 relay team by over an hour and a half. She is an age-group winner in the 3 km open water swimming race at the 2013 Pan American Masters Championships in Sarasota, Florida.
The Mighty Mermaids are a special team where age and competitiveness are their calling cards. The team consists of Christie Plank Ciraulo (55), Nancy Steadman Martin (54), Lisa Bennett (53), Jenny Cook (51), Karen Farnsworth Einsidler (53) and Tracy Grilli (52).
When Christie turned 50, she dreamed to organize a group of fast women in their 50's to swim together on a major open water swimming relay. Christie was looking for something more than just pool swimming. She introduced herself to Tracy and Nancy and kept in touch for over a year before the Trans Tahoe Relay became a possibility.
Jenny, Karen and Lisa were recruited and confirmed in short order. As Christie recalled, "Once our team was set, we were already picking out our team color, team suits and team nail polish.”
Grilli (New Hampshire) is the widely-recognized administrator for U.S. Masters Swimming in addition to having consistently placed on the world's top ten lists. As the Member Services Manager, she is responsible for assisting USMS members and volunteers with inquiries. She oversees several special projects, including registration for both Spring and Summer Nationals and the USMS annual meeting at the U.S. Aquatic Sports Convention. She also serves as the circulation manager for SWIMMER magazine and staff liaison to the USMS Rule Book.
Grilli earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and health from Slippery Rock State College in 1979. She began her professional career as a YMCA physical activities director and continued her involvement with the YMCA and YWCA, eventually serving as interim executive director of her local branch. USMS hired Grilli in 1996 as executive secretary and, as the only full-time employee, she operated the USMS National Office out of her home until 2008.
