María García López became the Queen (Reina) of the 55th edition of the Descenso a Nado de la Ría de Navia in Asturias, Spain. A long-time volunteer for the Asociación de Amigos de la Ría de Navia and a competitive swimmer with the Club Natación Villa de Navia, she became a Novata (first-time swimmer of the Descenso) at the age of 9.

Career

Garcia won 8 consecutive Descenso a Nado de la Ría de Navia races in her age-group and two overall events before reigning over the Descenso a Nado de la Ría de Navia in 2012 as an 18-year-old.

Role of Queen

Garcia continued to assist in the preparation and organization of the 55th Descenso a Nado de la Ría de Navia as well as participate in the awards ceremonies and parades throughout the week of the Descenso a Nado de la Ría de Navia, an all-consuming 3-day period of open water swimming celebration.

She fulfilled her responsibilities as Queen (Reina) together with Princess Marta Sánchez González and Princess Lucia Carrera Pérez.
