Keith Barnes was the 1987 recipient of the Glen S. Hummer Award recipient, an award given to the individual who makes the greatest contribution to the open water swimming in the United States.

Keith was a long-time Indiana Swimming Official specializing in the pool events. When Indiana Swimming and the Huntington YMCA again became active in the conduct of the National Championships, Keith was activated as an excellent meet director. He became a member of the National Open Water Swimming Committee. He did much for the development and increased proficiency of Officiating in Open Water Swimming. A personal friend of Glen Hummer, he incorporated many of Glens ideas and philosophies into his daily life and open water swimming.
