George Bare was the 2001 recipient of the Glen S. Hummer Award, an award given to the individual who makes the greatest contribution to the open water swimming in the United States.

He is currently a FINA Open Water Official. He is very active locally and on the national level. He has served as Referee at the USA Swimming National Open Water Five Kilometer Championships in 1997 and 1999, the Ten Kilometer events in 1998, the Fifteen Kilometer event in 1999, and the Twenty-Five Kilometer this year. He is invaluable in the legislative procedures for rule changes and always presents a common sense approach to resolving any safety or administrative issues.
