Frans Lawaetz is the President of the Charles River Swimming Club that hosts the Charles River Swim. He is a Virgin Island native has been playing on the Charles since moving to Boston in 2000 – usually on a windsurfer or sailboat or running alongside the river on the Esplanade. By his estimation he has, via windsurfing, been immersed in the Charles River at least fifty times. His day job involves systems integration and network security.

The Charles River Swimming Club was founded in 2005 with the dual purpose of organizing competitive swimming events in the Charles River and facilitating the return of public river swimming. Its main event is a one-mile swim in the Charles River basin called the Charles River One Mile Swim, annually held in early June.
