There used to be hundreds of river swimming club up and down the country - and the OSS hopes that some day soon, they'll start to regenerate - but now there are just two, this one, and Nuneham Riverbank Club on the Cam in Cambridge. Farleigh, on the River Frome, is a delight: it's a lovely gentle river, and there's a carparking field, and then a sunbathing field, with rope swings and jumps into the water. There's a weir for small children to wade from, and about 100m stretch between billowy banks to swim. Kingfishers, mayflies, mating damselflies, giant shags on floating branches... there is often plenty of wildlife to enjoy. The club charges about £12 for annual membership, or £1 per swim, and considers itself (and the gate) open and shut with the weather and season rather than any particular date. Members can, however, swim at any time. There is camping and cream teas at Stowford Manor Farm, which hosts the club. http://www.stowfordmanorfarm.co.uk/swimming.php
