Eugenie Paterson

Eugenie Paterson of Wellesley, Massachusetts was a student at Smith College when she swam across the Hellespont in July 1929 together with Eleanor Studley and Lucy Hancock. She was coached by Carl Michael of Yale University.

Her 1929 swim was the first time women swam across the Hellespont between Europe and Asia in Turkey. Known also as the Dardanelles, this strait is famous for its currents and strong winds.
