Mission Statement

As a mostly gay and lesbian swim club belonging to Illinois Masters Swim Association, the Chicago Smelts foster an atmosphere of camaraderie where swimmers of all abilities can participate in organized team workouts, train, and compete. Through social events and community service the team promotes personal growth and pride for all its members.

U.S. Masters Swimming

The Chicago Smelts are members of the Illinois Masters Swimming Association, the regional group of United States Masters Swimming. The Chicago Smelts regularly participate in local masters swimming meets throughout the winter/spring season and some of our Smelts compete in the annual U.S. Masters Swimming Short Course and Long Course National Championships.

Hour Postal Swim

In 2011, the Chicago Smelts hosted the Windy City Challenge, USMS 3000 and 6000-yard National Postal Championships. With more than 530 swimmers participating the Chicago Smelts raised thousands of dollars to donate to and strengthen local youth swim programs and GLBT social services.

It will host the 2015 Speedo USMS 1-Hour Postal National Championship.
